A message from NLSA Chairman Don Alt:
Hello and welcome to The Loop Update. Please check out the following important issues:
· The NLSA worked with Assemblyman John Carpenter and other members of the Assembly Committee on Natural Resources, Agriculture and Mining, to amend his bill, A.B. 407 (NRS 565.125) in 2004. We wanted to ensure that the State enforces procedural due process of law before livestock are targeted for seizure by any governmental agency. This made good sense and kept Nevada’s cattle safe until this year when the BLM once again began impounding livestock using a perceived loop-hole in NRS 565.125. The NLSA will once again address this issue during the upcoming legislative session and the Board has already passed proposed language to close this loop-hole.
· The NLSA monitors water legislation during Nevada’s Legislative Sessions to ensure the numerous vested water rights owned by Nevada’s livestock producers/ranchers are protected from government takings or interference. Our lobbyists aren’t paid nor do they lobby for the Southern Nevada Water Authority! The Forest Service may be attempting in the upcoming session to amend certain Nevada statutes dealing with water rights and grazing issues. As described at the Legislative Committee on Public Lands this August, these changes will not be for your good and must be opposed with sound reason.
· R-Calf USA, our affiliate, has been working closely with us to defeat the USDA boon-doggle the National Animal Identification System (NAIS). NLSA raised approximately $3,000 in conjunction with Gallagher Livestock Auction through a calf sale to help R-CALF USA keep the border shut and your cowherd safe and cattle prices up! Since the border has re-opened you can see the mischief that has been done, more BSE cattle and ever lower U.S. cattle prices.
· The NLSA was also active in supporting Country of Origin Labeling (COOL). Our first line of defense is to label meat and to track imported cattle.
· In 2006, the NLSA joined R-CALF USA in sending letters to the U.S. Senate expressing our strong opposition to HR 503, an Act to amend the Horse Protection Act to prohibit the shipping, transporting, moving, delivering, receiving, possessing, purchasing, selling, or donation of horses for slaughter for human consumption.
· There is much more legislation that will be brought at the federal and state level, NLSA will be there for you and you only…
For the above reasons we ask you to please fill out and send in your membership or renewal on the back of this The Loop Update or visit our website at www.nevadalivestock.org for a membership form. By joining you will automatically be entered in our rifle raffle (See reverse side). Thank you for your continued support of the NLSA.
Until next time, swing a wide loop!
