Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer signed a final country of origin meat labeling rule this afternoon, and it will go to the Federal Register tomorrow.

Neither Schafer nor Deputy Secretary Chuck Conner would comment on any revisions that may have been made to the rule, citing the silence required by the Administrative Procedures Act. It is unclear how soon publication will occur since the Federal Register has a backlog, Conner said.

Advance display of rules awaiting publication is sometimes available online at: www.regulations.gov or at www.usda.gov. Search for "country of origin, final rule."

Schafer announced his action during his final press conference with Washington based reporters on Thursday afternoon.
